Often called the Silver State, Nevada peacefully resides between California and Utah. While many will first think of Las Vegas and the unforgiving deserts, that's not everything Nevada has to offer. Carefully spread all over the country, you can find numerous fun things to do in the Nevada desert. There are many convenient locations for outdoor adventure, allowing you to enjoy the most epic sceneries. On top of it, you will find a plethora of landmarks, many of which are remnants of Nevada's rich culture and history.

Some of the best things to do in the Nevada desert

Lying under the shadow of the glamourous tourist destinations of Las Vegas, Nevada has some of the most impressive landscapes in the world. Of course, Las Vegas is a place not to miss. Still, those who seek something different will find numerous natural attractions, small towns, and extraordinary outdoor opportunities in the surrounding area.

If you are looking for exciting things to do in the Nevada desert, here are some of the best places to start with:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. The Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas
  3. Great Basin National Park
  4. Valley of Fire in Clark County
  5. Red Rock Canyon
  6. Geysers in Gerlach
  7. Clown Motel in Tonopah
  8. Area 51 in Groom Lake

1. Las Vegas

Of course, you can't go to Nevada and miss the entertainment capital of the world. Las Vegas is filled with luxurious resorts, restaurants, and hotels, making it a paradise for everyone looking for fun. This is, basically, a neon-lit desert city where you can find hotels with almost any theme you can think of. In general, some of the most notable locations include:

  • Bellagio Hotel & Casino
  • Las Vegas Strip
  • Luxor Hotel & Casino
  • The Neon Museum
  • and many, many more.

However, this perfect getaway city is not only suitable for tourists. Many former visitors decide to call Triple 7 Movers Las Vegas to help them make Las Vegas their new home. Because Las Vegas has traveling connections to the entire state. And with peaceful yet interesting surroundings, living on the outskirts of Las Vegas can be an adventure for itself.

2. The Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas

If you wonder what happened with all the famous neon signs from Las Vegas past, you will find them in this unusual place. Everything that marked the retro-modern and burlesque era of this fantastic city is saved from oblivion at this sign graveyard. At The Neon Boneyard, you get the chance to see everything from the golden age of Las Vegas. Including the original Aladdin's lamp from the famous Aladdin Casino. Even today, you can see some of the 150 decommissioned signs glowing if you take a tour at night.

3. Great Basin National Park

This unique national park is the top destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors. On the east side of the country, near the Utah border, you can visit Wheeler Peak, rich with wildlife. Not to mention it's home to some of the oldest plant specimens in the world: Bristlecone Pines - almost 5,000 years old. On top of it, Great Basin National Park offers dozens of camping sites. Great to set the headquarters for your upcoming hiking adventures.

4. Valley of Fire in Clark County

If you show interest in scenic drives, hiking, and astonishing landscapes, Valley of Fire is a perfect spot. This oldest and largest state park is a place where you can see the full extent of nature's force at work. The name, in essence, comes from all the red sandstone formations that, under a specific light and angle, seem like they are burning. Also, it's a place with rich history, filled with rocks and petroglyphs left by ancient residents. The area around Vegas offers various activities in Summer, like camping and hiking throughout the amazing landscapes. On top of it, animal enthusiasts will find it exceptionally interesting. Besides regular wildlife, which includes reptiles and different desert mammals, you can see many migrant birds all over this park.

5. Red Rock Canyon

An atypical example of nature's artistic tendencies is extravagantly displayed with large rock formations of Red Rock Canyon. If you are looking for a unique place in Nevada to visit and take pictures of, Red Rock Canyon is a perfect spot. It's also a popular destination for other outdoor hobbies and rock climbing enthusiasts. Many of which are competing to visit the parts surrounding the highest point in the area (more than 8,000 feet). In addition, the area is particularly rich with archeological remains of Native American culture of the past.

so it’s one of the fun things to do in the Nevada desert.

6. Geysers in Gerlach

The closest thing you can see in Nevada that looks like alien nature is the famous Geysers in Gerlach. However, despite the appearance, two out of three were created by people by accident. While the entire Hualapai Geothermal Flats is the area known for geothermal pools, the three giant stand out:

  • Fly Geyser
  • The Wizard
  • Will’s Geyser

In essence, they are growing mounds that still shoot hot water and are covered with plenty of minerals and algae. And thanks to the specific combination, they have several layers of mixed colors that look like something out of this world.

7. Clown Motel in Tonopah

Have you ever wondered why some people are scared of clowns? The closest feel to it you can get is to visit Clown Motel in Tonopah. Basically, it a motel in the desert oasis, in the middle of nowhere, decorated with thousands of different clowns. Everything, from human-sized statues to small figurines, stares right at you. To make it more thrilling, the motel is conveniently located near an abandoned graveyard. On the bright side, if you are not afraid of clowns, this will be a pleasant place to stay and explore the surroundings.

8. Area 51 in Groom Lake

For those looking for a bit of thrill and excitement about the unknown, Area 51 is probably the most famous place in the world. While you cannot visit the base itself or even come close (any attempt to enter will get you fines or jail time), you can visit interesting surrounding towns that are brimming with extraterrestrial themes.

In general, if you want a unique experience and buy a few alien-themed souvenirs, motels like The Little A’Le’Inn can offer you one of a kind experience. In the end, despite numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the area, there is little to no evidence of any extraterrestrial activities. Nevertheless, for a healthy dose of alienism, these can be exciting surroundings to visit.
